TASK 1 - FULLERTON HOTEL.

BACKGROUND INFO: The Fullerton Hotel was the former General Post Office during the early days . During World War 2 it was used as a hospital. After the war , it became the headquaters of Singapore Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore. In 1997 , it was converted into a hotel as it is now. Renovations estimated $300million turned this post-office into a world class five star hotel.

Victoria Theater and Concert Hall (North of Fullerton Hotel)

Victoria Theater and Concert Hall - since the front entrance of the Fullerton Hotel faces South, we decided to walk to the other side of the building, and Victoria Concert Hall was the one that caught our eyes. We took a picture of it. Victoria Concert Hall is currently undergoing a major two-and-half year renovation. Victoria Theater and Concert Hall was constructed as a Town Hall in 1862. In 1901, in memory of the late Queen Victoria, the building was converted into Victoria Memorial Hall, and subsequently underwent renovation to turn it into a theater.

Banks and business buildings along Shenton Way (South of the Fullerton Hotel)

Many of the colonial buildings along the Shenton Way have been replace with modern high-rise buildings. It is currently the financial hub of the Republic of Singapore. Many multi-national businesses and foreign banks are located in this area.

Marina Sands Integrated Resort (East of the Fullerton Hotel)

Marina Sands Integrated Resort is the newly opened resort that includes a huge casino. Together with the Resort World in Sentosa, it has drawn many tourists and help the economy recover from recent recession.

This is another part of the financial hub of the Republic of Singapore. The two buildings behind us are Maybank and Bank of China; both are two among many foreign banks in this area.

Task 6 - Overall Reflection - HOM, School Values

We learnt a lot more about the history of Singapore, for example, the function of colonial buildings and that our fore fathers were hardworking and resilient people who built the country with their bare hands and therefore we are now enjoying the fruits of their labour. We have applied many of the HOM values and the school rules during the trip. For example, teamwork, responding with wonderment and owe. We also used gathering data through all senses. As for the school values which were applied, we applied self-discipline and creativity the most. We had to work as a team and think interdependently to understand each other's ideas with clarity and precision so that we can improve on ideas. We had to be alert so that we would not miss out on and information. We also applied past knowledge and applied what we already knew so it is easier to understand information.

Task 5 - Colonial Buildings

The Old Parliament House

The Old Parliament House was built in 1827. The building was the home to the Parliament of Singapore from 1965 to 1999. Currently, this building is used for multi-disciplinary arts venue which plays host to art exhibitions and concerts. This building is currently the oldest government building in Singapore.

Victoria Theater and Concert Hall

The building was built in 1862 for use as the Town Hall. In `1901, in memory of the late Queen Victoria, the building was renovation to turn it into a theater.

Fullerton Hotel

The building was built in 1928 and served for many years as the General Post Office of the Republic of Singapore.

Task 4 - Raffles Landing Site

Raffles:

Greetings your honour. May I have your permission to set up a trading port in Singapore? I promise you it will benefit Singapore greatly. Ships from the East to West and West to East would stop by, due to its strategic location and deep waters, to restock and refuel. It would create job opportunities for locals, and bring riches to this island.

Temenggong:

It is a good idea, however, having ships stop by Singapore would bring many foreigners. We are too short handed to handle the extra influx of people. Not knowing the culture and traditions of these foreigners, our security will be jeopardized.

Raffles:

Your honour, not to worry! I will fly the British flag high. Nobody would dare be disrespectful to Her Majesty, Queen Victoria of England.
